This is a trek taking walkers into the wild High Atlas Mountains following ancient Berber mule trails and walking though some of the most spectacular countryside in Morocco. The route is moderately hard with steep climbs and rocky slopes on the final leg to the summit of Jbel Toubkal at 4167m. No visit to this eclectic country would be complete without a visit to magical Marrakech!

Marrakech – Tiziane – Aazib Tamsoult –Neltner – The Summit – Imlil – Marrakech
Day 1: To Marrakech
Depart London Gatwick on Royal Air Maroc for direct flight to Morocco.
Transfer to hotel. Overnight Tichka hotel.
Day 2: To Tiziane
Morning leave for Tiziane (1800m) via Tassa Ouirgane (1500m). Start the trek at Wirgane and meet the muleteers and cook. Walk through the pine forests for a lunch picnic stop at Tassa Wirgane before continuing along the charming red-soiled Azzadene Valley to Tiziane where you spend the night. 5 hour walk.
Day 3: To Aazib Tamsoult
Trek along the river to Id Issa and onto the remote Berber village of Tizi Oussem. After passing the Ighoulidene waterfalls walk the zigzag path to Lepiney refuge (3000m) for a picnic lunch. Then continue to the camp at Talat N Izgaren (3200m) at the foot of the pass. 6 hour walk.
Day 4: To Neltner
Follow ancient mule tracks, on a moderately difficult trek, up the pass to Tizi Aguelzim (3104m) with dramatic views of the Atlas Mountains. Cross the ridge and descend to Neltner refuge for a picnic lunch. There is an optional afternoon walk to the Wagane Valley. Overnight Neltner Camp. 6hour walk.
Day 5: To the Summit
An early start to see the amazing sunrise and begin the trek to the summit. Join the path in the big ravine and climb up the pass to Toubkal to begin the final ascent to the highest peak in the Maghreb - Jbel Toubkal at 4167m. The views are simply spectacular. After a snack return to the campsite for a hot meal before walking downstream to the remote village of Armed. Overnight in a local gite. 8 hour walk.
Day 6: To Marrakech via Imlil
After a late breakfast you head down the valley to the village of Imlil to meet the transport and transfer to Marrakech. Two nights at the Tichka hotel.
Day 7: Marrakech City tour
Full day tour of this charismatic city with visits to the vibrant Medina –with the renowned Koutoubia Minaret: considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the country. Also see the Kasbah, the 16th C. Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque. The area around the Jemaa El Fna Square overflows with shops selling everything imaginable! Wonderful Moroccan jewellery, leatherwear, perfumes and spices and carpets galore. Finally, no visit would be complete without wandering in the cool shade of the Agdal and Menara gardens.
Day 8: To London
Transfer to the airport for return flight on Royal Air Maroc to London Gatwick. |
