Day 1: To Tangiers
Direct flight from London to Tangiers. Transfer and three nights at the El Minzah hotel.
Day 2: Tangiers City Tour
Full day tour of this fascinating city. The modern day Tangiers has a distinctive cosmopolitan air with wide boulevards lined with shops. Sip coffee on the Boulevard Pasteur - home to ‘cafe society’. Visit the Place de France with its breathtaking views towards Spain. Nestled in the corner is the infamous Cafe de Paris, once a rendezvous for WW2 agents. Wander the 'Grand Socco' market square and hunt for bargains – arts, crafts and trinkets. Enjoy the cool of the Mendoubia Gardens home to a magnificent 800-year-old banyan tree.
Day 3: Excursion to Tetouan
Until independence Tetouan was a Spanish protectorate and still retains a delightful Hispanic – Moroccan character. The setting is picturesque – the backdrop of he brooding Rif mountains contrast vividly with the dancing waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The Medina is not to be missed and is a UNESCO World Heritage site - look out for the local crafts - the wood and leatherwork is particularly good. Also visit the Artisan School to see traditional crafts being taught to the next generation.
Day 4: To Fez
Leave behind the spectacular scenery of the Rif Mountains with its craggy sandstone peaks and drive to Fez nestled in the lower slopes of the Atlas Mountains. Three nights Riad Fez
Day 5: Full day Fez City tour
Full day city tour of Fez, the oldest of the Imperial cities. Visits will include the walled Fez el Bali with its 9400 twisting and turning alleyways and byways. It’s one of the oldest medieval cities in the world with beautiful Mosques and Merdersa. Pottery, carpets and vibrant Moroccan jewellery are excellent buys in the souks. Also visit the King’s Palace and the Bou Inania Madrasa.
Day 6: Full day tour to Volubilis and Moulay Idriss
After breakfast drive to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, in the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains. The rich heritage of this remote outpost of Roman, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, comes alive when looking at the vibrant mosaics depicting Gods and nymphs. It’s a site to wander and absorb the legacy of Rome in a far distant land. Later visit Moulay Idriss, one of the holiest cities in Morocco before returning to the hotel.
Day 7: To Meknes
Morning drive to Meknes. Afternoon city tour of this smallest but most delightful of the 4 Moroccan Imperial cities, with its UNESCO World Heritage listed Medina. Walk from the El-Hdim Square to numerous souks and the old Medina – a hubbub of noise as local musicians, traditional physicians and snake charmers vie for your attention. Day 8: To Marrakech
Drive to Marrakech though the lower slopes of the Atlas Mountains. In the teeming, labyrinthine passages of the old city's markets there is everything you can possibly think of to buy! Day 9: Full day City tour of Marrakech
Gardens are highly prized in Marrakech and no visit would be complete without wandering in the cool shade of the Agdal and Menara gardens. Visits also include the beautiful Medina - the celebrated Koutoubia Minaret: considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture, the Kasbah, the 16th C. Saadian Tombs and the Koutoubia Mosque. Bargain hunt in the Jemaa El Fna Square with its shops and lovely old buildings.
Day 10: Marrakech at leisure
Laze by the pool, wander the lively streets or visit the Majorelle gardens privately owned by Yves St. Laurent.
Day 11: To Essaouria
Drive to Essaouria on the coast for a few days of relaxing on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean with its miles of beaches and fast becoming a windsurfing hotspot. Three nights at the Villa de l’o

Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley once lived in Essaouria, and today it has a reputation for its ‘café’ society - there are numerous tempting cafés and patisseries where you can sit on the boulevard and watch the world go by
Day 13: At leisure
Perhaps today shop for wooden gifts at the Skala De La Ville, where numerous craft shops produce top quality marquetry; other good buys include leather bags, jewellery, carpets, rugs and brassware.
Day 14: To Marrakech
Transfer to airport for direct return flight to London. |
